The method works in three steps: in step one the new vocabulary structures to be learned are taught using a combination of translation, gestures, and personalized questions; in step two those structures are used in a spoken class story; and finally, in step three, these same structures are used in a class reading.

Question:这个苹果有多少公斤？ How many kilograms is this apple?
Students Answer: 5斤，1斤 …… 2.5kg, 0.5 kg……

What is Comprehensible Input:
Comprehensible input is language input that can be understood by listeners despite them not understanding all the words and structures in it. It is described as one level above that of the learners if it can only just be understood. According to Krashen’s theory of language acquisition, giving learners this kind of input helps them acquire language naturally, rather than learn it consciously.
When you heard ‘Nihao’,你好, I think most of people will understand the meaning. this is Comprehensible Input.
But when you heard ‘qu ni da ye’ 去你大爷 , I think 99.9999% Chinese learners didn’t know the meaning. this is not Comprehensible Input.
How to get more comprehensible Chinese content input ?
In the classroom or online class
Trying to understand language slightly above their level encourages learners to use natural learning strategies such as guessing words from context and inferring meaning. As the example suggests, a teacher needs to know the level of the learners very well in order to select comprehensible input, and in a large class of mixed ability, different learners will need different texts.
Listen to easy Chinese stories
I strongly suggest you listen to simple and understandable Chinese short stories and funy stories. This is very important.
There are many literary works in China, but as a beginner of Chinese, you don’t need to read the four famous works that are difficult to understand, but you can read the children’s story version . If you can’t understand 70% of the content, please throw the book aside, or the content you hear is difficult, please turn off the sound. This is not learning Chinese, but a waste of life.
